Swinging into Spring
Quick Tips to Spring into the Season After a Winter Hiatus
The winter months are finally loosening their grip, and for golfers that can only mean one thing – it's time to dust off those clubs and hit the greens once again! I’ve been doing a lot of behind the scenes work this winter, and one of my favorite days was going with my son to the Philadelphia Golf Show in Oaks, PA. We had some good fun together trying out the latest clubs.
After a season of winter hibernation, getting back into the swing of things might seem a bit challenging, but fear not! I am here to help you navigate the transition from winter rest period to the spring time fun and here are my top 5 tips.
Assess and Set Realistic Goals.
First things first…Before you even step foot on the course, take a moment to assess your golf game. Consider where you left off last season and set realistic goals for improvement. Whether it's perfecting your swing, shaving strokes off your handicap, or simply enjoying the game more, having clear objectives will keep you focused and motivated throughout the season. This is a great time to start a golf journal. It allows you to write down tangible goals, set expectations, and keep notes on your golf journey. No matter if you play the game for fun and relaxation, want to make your high school golf team, win your club championship, or just enjoy the game more, a golf journal allows you to do this. The golf journal gives you a place to write down notes about your practice session, fundamentals from your golf lessons, or recap your round to increase your enjoyment of this amazing game. I will be touching on the golf journal more in a later blog post.
2. Warm-Up Smartly.
Your body might not be as limber as it was during the peak of golf season. Incorporate dynamic warm-up exercises to prevent injuries and ensure your muscles are ready for action. Spend a few extra minutes on the practice green to reacquaint yourself with the putting stroke and build confidence before facing the challenges of the fairways. Start slowly, let your golf swing warm-up before going full throttle. You can start at home with some flexibility activities stretching, yoga, are all beneficial to your golf game. As I recommend often start short (putting, short game) then proceed toward full-swing. Your driver should always be the last club you hit, I know, we all want to “let the big dog eat”. Just remember drive for show, putt for dough!
3. Gear Check.
Give your golf gear the attention it deserves. Inspect your clubs, clean your grips, and ensure everything is in proper working order. If you've been eyeing new equipment, now might be the perfect time to treat yourself. Upgrading your gear can inject a fresh dose of enthusiasm into your game and give you that extra boost of confidence as you embark on a new season. And while new club may temporarily help your game, great fundamentals and understanding of your golf swing are the most effective way to play better golf.
4. Seasonal Fashion Update.
Out with the winter layers, and in with the spring golf fashion! Treat yourself to some new golf attire that not only looks good but also provides comfort and functionality on the course. From breathable polo shirts to stylish hats, embracing the season's fashion trends can make you feel like a pro and boost your overall golfing experience. The PGA Merchandise show was back in January and there are a lot of new creative styles out there to meet anyone’s style. Here are my favorites:

5. Spring Tune-Up Lessons:
Consider investing in a few lessons to shake off the winter rust and refine your skills. 9 Iron Golf can provide you with personalized feedback, identify areas for improvement, and offer valuable tips to enhance your game. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a beginner, a little professional guidance can go a long way in making your return to the course more enjoyable. We always start with fundamentals of a sound golf swing then evolve through your personal body dynamics to make sure you maximize your individual golf potential. I’ve been working with a few high school students this winter as they prepare to try out for their school’s golf teams. They have been working so hard and I can’t wait to celebrate their golf successes with them!
